L.A. Lunch at Apple Pan

L.A. Lunch at Apple Pan

So we were on our way to visit friends up in L.A. and with traffic slowing and lunch fast approaching were in need of a quick recharge, so we detoured off the 405 freeway and turned onto Pico Boulevard, meandering down a few blocks to the Apple Pan.

The Apple Pan is an original diner which hasn’t changed since the 1940’s.  With a U-shaped counter and burgers cooked up right in the center, an original cash register (cash only), and a no-nonsense yet attentive old school waiter who will pour catsup on a plate for you – it’s 1947 all over again.  That’s right, The Apple Pan opened in 1947 and is only a few blocks south of Fox Studios.  We ordered one of their world famous apple pies and brought it to our friends party, it was a hit.

Their burgers are grilled for six minutes from locally sourced beef, served on a fist-sized chunk of lettuce and sliced dill pickles, you can choose either steak burger with original relish or the deliciously tangy hickory sauce burger, with cheese if you like.

Your soda is served in a can or bottle along side a paper cone filled with ice, set in what might resemble an antique metal candle stick holder.

Their home made pie has a flaky unique crust and arrives hot in your hand, including a pint of cinnamon juice which is poured over the top when you’re ready to serve. And yes we like it a la mode so we picked up a quart of vanilla ice cream on the way.  We’ll have to try the pecan next time around.

Conveniently located across the street from the Westside Pavilion(http://www.westsidepavilion.com) with Santa Monica, Culver City, Westwood and Beverly Hills only a stones throw away – The Apple Pan is an experience everyone should try again and again.  I’d go out on a limb and say you haven’t lived till you try The Apple Pan.

Today the restaurant is a late night favorite for a bouquet of movie stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Sigourney Weaver as well as those perky Jonas Brothers.

You can call in your order ahead of a visit (310) 475-3585 or try the full experience at the counter of The Apple Pan yourself when you’re in L.A. and here’s where to find them.
