30 Minutes From Hollywood Is Coastal Marina del Rey

Only 30 minutes away from Hollywood is the coastal town of Marina del Rey. What began as a natural mudflat was dredged in the mid-1950’s after approval by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to create what was considered at the time and even to this day as one of the most valuable resources in Los Angeles County. When it opened in 1965 the project became the largest man-made suite of 19 individual marinas in the United States.

Marina del ReyToday the marina is a boating mecca for families, biz folks as well as a large swath of the Hollywood elite including Gwen Steffani, Rachel Leigh Cook, Orland Bloom and the Disney Philharmonic architect Frank Gehry who frequently can be seen sailing his 44 ft. Beneteau at the weekend.

You can become part of the scene as well. There is of course the ever popular Fisherman’s Wharf area with many shops and restaurants and if you feel the need to get down to water level and enjoy the breeze and skipper your own fate by renting a 14 ft. sailboat for $45/hr.

Whether you’re a boater, fisherman or beachgoer, the Marina del Rey area can satisfy. Bookend on one side by the Palos Verdes Peninsula (and Trump golf course) and a beautiful stretch of protected Malibu on the other it’s a great way to reboot your senses.
